ST. VINCENT’S HIGH SCHOOL

The origin of St. Vincent’s School is closely linked with the arrival of the Jesuits to the Northwest region of India. Bishop Anastasius Hartman brought the Jesuits to his Vicariate of Bombay in 1853 to start an educational institution in Poona. The first Jesuit, Fr. Walter Steins, thought otherwise and started St. Xavier’s School in Bombay.

nightschoolIn 1865, a year after St. Xavier’s Church, Pune, was completed, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, under the presidency of an eminent lay Catholic C. Laughnan, Esqr. took up the matter of education, and set up a special committee with Mr. Charles Cook as its chairman. On Friday, April 5, 1867, Mr. Cook shifted from his house, and next day, two Fathers arrived from Bombay to start the school: Joseph Brunner and John McDonnough. The school was started on Tuesday, April 9, with just five pupils.

The academic standard of the school has always been remarkable. The first batch of students prepared for matriculation exams in 1875, did creditably. Dr. K .B. Grant, Admiral B. Samson, Governor B. Dias, Wing Cdr. Clarence D’Lima, Former Chief Secretary of Goa, Mr. Praxi Fernandes, Mr. Angelo da Fonseca and Lt. Gen. N. S. Cheema and his brother Mr. N. S. Cheema (ONGC), Mr. Mohan Dharia, Mr. Tarlok Singh (Planning Commission GOI) are some illustrious Alumni of the school.

St. Vincent’s promoted and excelled in co-curricular fields. Since 1941, the school has held without interruption the championship of the Poona Schools’ Athletic Association in Inter-School Tournaments. Some of our Alumni have won international acclaim, Dinshaw Irani (Shot-put) and Wilson Jones (Billiards).

With a view to education for service and leadership, the Scouts Movement was introduced in 1949, and Fr. Lovett D’Souza worked hard for its development until his premature death on Feb. 2, 1966. The Road Safety Patrol (RSP) was started in 1962, the Army Wing of National Cadet Corp (NCC) in 1956, and the Navy Wing in 1964. In 1958, Fr. Lovett D’Souza started the Social Service League, and the House System in 1962. The Small Savings Drive was initiated to mark the International Thrift Year in 1969.
